Kids are drawn to tearjerker books because they’re a safe space to explore complex emotions.
These stories provide a powerful experience, joining the characters on their emotional journeys and experiencing their own. All of these books present the death of a character but in different situations and with different coping strategies. By experiencing these fictional losses, children readers could learn coping mechanisms for when they lose someone as well. However, I strongly recommend readers not read one tearjerker after another but take a break with other genres instead.
