Children love both the familiarity and the fantasy in books where the animals act like humans. Authors use the realistic settings and animal attributes that readers are already familiar with and add in the appealing fantasy of adventure, often as good versus evil. That is certainly the case of all the books I’ve chosen.
Of special note – Pax by Sara Pennypacker includes descriptions of war and may be best suited for a more mature reader.
