Mysteries are great opportunities to see if the reader is deeply comprehending the story.
Can they pick out the clues as the story goes along? Were they able to deduce how the characters stop the bad guys before the reveal at the end? If they were surprised by the ending, can they identify where the clues were they didn’t pick up earlier?
All of these opportunities for deeper reading, combined with an engaging plot and entertaining spy characters around the same age as the readers are, a winning reading combination.
**Of special note – Undercover Latina by Aya de Leon includes action and spies but adds a layer of exposure to racism when the Latina main character goes undercover as a white girl and confronts some racist remarks. The opportunities for discussion abound.
